The Aflac Cancer Story: Why We’re Putting Our Whole Heart Into Cancer Care

For more than 20 years, the people of Aflac have devoted ourselves to helping children with cancer through the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Why? Because we know that children need more than medicine to cope with this disease—and because cancer is personal to us, too.

How we began

Aflac was founded more than 60 years ago by three brothers, Jon, Paul and Bill Amos, who lost their father to cancer. Among the first products we sold: Cancer Insurance. Since then, we’ve paid out over $13.7 billion in cancer claims1—and we’ve learned a thing or two about cancer, how patients are cared for, and how treatment touches families and caregivers, too. That’s why we put our own cancer story at the heart of our philanthropy.

“All of us have been touched by cancer one way or another—the mission really speaks to our employees and to our leadership,” said Buffy Swinehart who oversees Social Purpose for Aflac.

The ask

It all started with a cold call from an Atlanta children’s hospital, asking for a $25,000 donation from Aflac to name a room there. The hospital’s director of development met with Dan Amos, CEO of Aflac (who is the son of Aflac founder Paul Amos), and his wife Kathelen Amos, now president of The Aflac Foundation, Inc. The director shared both a donation request and her own personal story: Her daughter had cancer, and the family was flying clear across the country from Atlanta to Seattle to get treatment.

The response from Aflac was immediate, heartfelt, and much bigger than that mother could’ve imagined: We made a $3 million commitment on‐the‐spot.

In 1995, we became the name sponsor of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Since then, we’ve donated more than $122 million toward pediatric cancer research and treatment. Much of that money comes from over 16,000 agents and employees who make individual contributions—it’s a lot of little gifts that add up to make a huge impact.

Big reach, bigger goals

Since it began, Aflac’s commitment has grown in national reach through an awareness campaign called #Duckprints, a Macy’s sponsorship to sell plush ducks to benefit childhood cancer, and the sale of Aflac Duck merchandise to benefit more than 50 children’s hospitals nationwide. Because less than 5 percent of federal cancer research funding is spent on childhood cancers2, Aflac is committed to raising awareness and dollars for research.

This year, we unveiled My Special Aflac Duck. Developed by Sproutel, an innovator of patient‐centered products to improve positive health outcomes, this smart, comforting companion helps children feel less alone during their cancer treatment. The duck uses interactive technology to emulate young patients' moods, undergo the same therapies, dance, quack and nuzzle to help comfort children when they need it most.

All along the way, we’ve turned to our own cancer survivors and for stories and guidance on everything from creating My Special Aflac Duck, to developing new cancer insurance policies, to deciding how The Aflac’s commitment to childhood cancer will grow.

“My husband is a cancer survivor,” said Swinehart. “I know what it’s like and I have a different perspective because of it.” Today, Swinehart said, her husband is doing great and she’s using her own experience to help kids and families facing childhood cancer. “My definition of a cure? To have these children grow up and have children of their own.”
